ARTIST STATEMENT
I have been creating art for as long as I can remember. Sketching and painting has always had a place in my life. I’ve been seriously painting with oils for 13 years. When I begin work on a painting, it is like I am getting to know a new friend. I study my subject to decide how best to interpret it on the canvas. Seeing the different shapes, shadows and light takes dedicated time. There is always some trial and error along the way.
Eventually, I feel I know my subject well enough to go forth with confidence. But like getting to know a person, each experience is different. At times I realize I hadn’t seen something that was there all along. It could be a reflection or a subtle color shift I missed until later in the process. I love this process of discovery. It never gets old.
My inspiration comes from diverse sources: nature, an interesting face, familiar objects, food or something from my imagination.
Sharing my art with others is especially important to me. Art is a connection shared with others like you. I hope you enjoy these works.
